Email Address

An email address is a unique identifier used to send and receive email messages. It typically consists of a local part, the @ symbol, and a domain. For example, in name@example.com, name identifies the mailbox and example.com identifies the email domain.

Parts of an Email Address

An email address has three main parts:

  • Local part: Appears before the @ symbol and identifies the specific mailbox.
  • @ symbol: Separates the mailbox name from the domain.
  • Domain: Appears after the @ symbol and identifies the mail service or organization that handles the address.

For example, in john@example.com, john is the local part and example.com is the domain.

What Makes an Email Address Valid?

An email address must follow the required format and use a domain that can support email delivery. A correctly formatted address alone does not confirm that the mailbox exists or can receive messages. Email verification can perform additional checks to determine whether an address is likely to accept email.

Why Is Email Address Quality Important?

Accurate email addresses are important for businesses that rely on email for communication, marketing, account access, or customer engagement. Invalid, outdated, or incorrectly entered addresses can lead to failed deliveries and unnecessary bounces .

Keeping email data accurate helps businesses send messages to the intended recipients and maintain the quality of their contact lists.
