Email Client

An email client is an application or program that allows you to send, receive, organize, and manage email messages. It connects to your email account and provides the interface you use to read and respond to messages.

What Does an Email Client Do?

An email client lets you perform common email tasks such as:

  • Reading and replying to messages
  • Composing and sending emails
  • Organizing messages into folders
  • Managing attachments
  • Searching your mailbox
  • Managing multiple email accounts

For example, Microsoft Outlook , Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird are email clients. Web-based services such as Gmail also provide an email interface, although the terms email client and webmail service are not always used interchangeably.

Email Client vs. Email Service

An email service provides the infrastructure needed to store and deliver email, while an email client provides the interface used to access and manage those messages.

For example, Gmail provides an email service, and you can access a Gmail account through its web interface or an email client such as Outlook or Apple Mail.

Why Does the Email Client Matter?

The email client can affect how a message is displayed to the recipient. Different clients may handle elements such as HTML, images, fonts, links, and formatting differently.

For businesses sending email campaigns , checking how messages appear across common email clients can help ensure that the content is readable and functions as intended.
