ABUSE EMAIL ADDRESS

An abuse email address is a dedicated address used to report spam, phishing, malware, or other harmful activity associated with a domain or IP address. A common example is abuse@domain.com. The abuse@ address is a standardized mailbox name used for handling reports of Internet-related abuse.

How Are Abuse Email Addresses Used?

Abuse reports can come from individual recipients, mailbox providers, security teams, or organizations that identify suspicious email activity. A report may include details about the message or activity, such as the sender, recipient, domain, IP address, or reason for the complaint.

The organization managing the relevant domain or email infrastructure can review the report, investigate the activity, and take appropriate action when misuse is confirmed.

What Types of Activity Are Reported?

An abuse address may be used to report activity such as:

  • Unsolicited or persistent spam
  • Phishing and impersonation attempts
  • Malware or malicious emails
  • Fraudulent messages
  • Unauthorized use of a domain or email infrastructure
  • Activity that violates a provider's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

The reporting process and actions taken after a complaint can vary depending on the organization, service provider, and type of activity involved.

How Can Abuse Reports Affect Email Senders?

Repeated abuse complaints can indicate that recipients consider emails unwanted or that senders need to review their sending practices. High complaint levels can damage sender reputation and may affect inbox placement and overall email deliverability.

Reducing complaints requires more than verifying whether an email address is deliverable. Senders should maintain accurate recipient data, process unsubscribe requests promptly, follow appropriate consent practices, and send relevant content to intended recipients.

Email verification can determine whether an email address is deliverable before sending. However, email verification cannot predict recipient behavior, such as whether a message will be considered unwanted or reported as spam.
